Né en 1953 à Port-au-Prince (Haïti). Ses parents échappent avec lui à la dictature haïtienne de Duvalier en s’installant au Congo. Raoul Peck poursuit des études d’ingénieur aux Etats-Unis, France et en Allemagne. Il se tourne ensuite vers le journalisme, la photographie et le cinéma.
Sometimes in April, salué par la critique internationale, était en sélection officielle au prestigieux festival du cinéma de Berlin 2005. The Man by the Shore (1993) était à Cannes. Moloch Tropical (2009), shakespearien et inspiré, Lumumba (2000), sur la vie du leader Africain, ne font que confirmer son immense talent.
Il a réalisé plusieurs documentaires de références tels : Lumumba, Mort d’un Prophète (1990); Desounen (1994); Fatal Assistance (2013).
En 1994, il obtient le prix Nestor Almendros « Human Rights Watch » pour l’ensemble de son travail en faveur des Droits de l’Homme. De 1995 à 1997, il est Ministre de la Culture de la République d’Haïti. Il devient ensuite Président de la « Commission d’Aide au Cinéma Fonds Sud » (France), avant d’être nommé en janvier 2010 Président de la prestigieuse école de cinéma la FEMIS (Paris).
Son oeuvre est radicalement engagée politiquement et socialement, avec pour thème récurrent l’héritage de la dictature post-coloniale. Il vit actuellement entre Berlin, New York, Paris et Haïti.

Raoul Peck’s complex body of work includes films The Man by the Shore (Competition Cannes 1993); Lumumba (Director’s Fortnight, Cannes 2000, also bought and aired by HBO); He directed and produced Sometimes in April for HBO (Berlinale 2005); Moloch Tropical (Toronto 2009, Berlin 2010); and his latest film Murder in Pacot (Toronto 2014, Berlin 2015).

His documentaries include Lumumba, Death of a Prophet (1990); Desounen (1994, BBC); Fatal Assistance (Berlinale,Hot Docs 2013) supported by the Sundance Institute and BritdocFoundation (UK), broadcasted on major TV channels (Canal+, ARTE, etc.)

He served as jury member at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival, is presently chairman of the National French film school La Femis, and is the subject of numerous retrospectives worldwide. In 2001, the Human Rights Watch Organization awarded him with the Irene Diamond Lifetime Achievement Award.

He recently completed shooting his latest feature film, The Young Karl Marx, a European coproduction, shot in Germany and Belgium (produced by Velvet Film, in coproduction with Agat Films).
